What Motivates You As A Driver?

What motivates me most as a driver is the opportunity to connect with people from all walks of life and hear their unique stories. Every rider has their own journey, and I take pride in being part of their day—even in a small way. Whether it’s helping someone get to an important appointment or simply offering a reliable and friendly ride, I find fulfillment in knowing I’m making a positive difference in their day-to-day lives.

How Do You Ensure Safety On The Bus?

Safety is my top priority every time I get behind the wheel. I begin each day with a thorough circle check of the vehicle to ensure it is in proper working condition — checking everything from tires and lights to brakes. This daily inspection helps prevent potential issues before they happen and ensures the vehicle is ready for safe operation.

Beyond the vehicle itself, I make sure that all passengers follow safety protocols, including wearing seatbelts. I communicate clearly with riders about the importance of these procedures and take the time to assist anyone who may need help securing themselves properly.

In addition, I stay alert, always being mindful of changing road conditions, traffic patterns, and the needs of my passengers. Whether it’s adjusting my driving in poor weather or helping a rider safely board or exit the vehicle, I take every step to create a safe and secure environment for everyone on board.

What Did You Do Before Becoming A Transit Driver?

Before becoming a Transit Driver, I spent over 40 years owning and operating a dairy farm. During that time, I not only managed the day-to-day operations of the farm but also built a reputable business in international dairy genetics. I marketed and sold both live animals and embryos to clients around the world, showcasing high-quality Canadian dairy genetics on a global stage.  This role required a strong foundation in animal care, business management, international marketing, and customer relations. I was deeply involved in every aspect of the business, from herd management and breeding programs to logistics, sales, and networking with global buyers.

Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to receive a few recognitions that I’m especially proud of. One of the highlights was when our dairy farm was awarded the Master Breeder Shield by Holstein Canada in 2015. This award is considered one of the highest honours in the Canadian dairy industry.  I also had the honour of judging at two of the most respected dairy cattle shows in the world — the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto and the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin. Being asked to take part in these events was truly humbling. These experiences have stayed with me and continue to remind me of the importance of hard work, lifelong learning, and staying grounded in the things that matter most.

My experience in agriculture taught me the importance of discipline, responsibility, attention to detail, and connecting with people from diverse backgrounds—skills that I’ve carried with me into my role as a Transit Driver. It was a demanding yet incredibly rewarding career that shaped who I am today.

What Is Your Most Memorable Moment As A Transit Driver?

One of my most memorable moments as a Transit Driver was when I picked up a visually impaired passenger who was accompanied by a guide dog. As they were getting settled, the dog gently rested her head on my shoulder for a moment. It felt like her way of saying, “I trust you with the person I’m here to protect.” That simple gesture meant a lot to me.  It reminded me of the trust that riders place in us every day — not just for a safe ride, but for a sense of comfort, respect, and care. Moments like that stay with you, and they reinforce just how meaningful this role can be.

Tell Us About Yourself and Your Relationship With Your Community

As a longtime member of the agricultural community, I’ve been very involved in youth mentorship and leadership development. I proudly served as a Dairy 4-H leader, where I mentored young people in various aspects of agriculture, helping them grow not only in knowledge but also in confidence, responsibility, and teamwork. Watching them develop a passion for agriculture and succeed in their own paths has been incredibly rewarding.  Currently, I serve on the Holstein Canada Judging Committee and am the Chairman of the Ontario Dairy Judging Committee. These roles allow me to contribute to the training and development of youth across Canada, preparing them to officiate and participate in dairy judging competitions at both national and international levels. Through these programs, we help young people build skills in critical thinking, public speaking, animal evaluation, and leadership—skills that benefit them far beyond the show ring.  For the past 20 years, I have been proud to be part of organizations that support the next generation of agricultural leaders and to help create opportunities for them to grow, compete, and connect with others in the industry worldwide.
